Day 12 Trieste 🇮🇹
My young friend Alex had planned a wonderful tour of Trieste and surrounds. First stop the bike shop where I had booked in my bike for a once over.
Alex’s friend Andrea joined us for the day and we stopped for brekky before we headed off to walk through the old town of Trieste. As one of the largest shipping ports in Europe, it is a city full of large impressive buildings,
canals and then an absolute maze of narrow cobbled steep streets heading up to the castle on the hill. We saw the Roman Theatre which used to sit on the waterfront but they reclaimed quite a large section of the land. There is also a Roman arch with a house built right next to it. We walked down to the harbour area with a huge cruise ship in dock.We continued exploring the streets with tall stylish buildings and then Alex surprised me with a trip on the last remaining historic 1902 Tram di Opicina. The Tram travels through the streets then switches to a cog style of track for the steep climb to the Obelisk.

As we climbed up through luxurious suburbs, we could see views of the city below. The route is lined with luxury villas with ocean views!
There is a lookout point at the top.
Andrea had driven his car to meet us at the top and we headed north east along the Slovenian border in search of Osmiza. Osmiza is an agritourism initiative where organic farmers open their homes & farms for 8 days a year to share their own produce. There is a website which lists which farms are open today and they are also signed along the hilly route.
Today we visited a beautiful farm called Pipan Klaric. It is also a small BnB.
They served divine food out on the vine covered terrace with platters of their own cheese and meats and pickled vegetables with bread and olive oil. A delightful way to spend a couple of hours on a warm day.
Then my tour continued to the most unusual modern concrete church built in the 1960’s and visible the whole way along the coast. Again the views to the ocean were breathtaking.
We then drove the steepest street back down to Trieste where Andrea dropped us at the bike shop to collect my bike and walk back up the hill to Alex’s via the best gelato shop.
Thankyou Alex for the thought, time and effort you put into showing me your beautiful city!
