Day 12: Venice 🇮🇹 10km 🚴♀️, 12km 🚶♀️- Trieste 🇮🇹🚄
I woke after a much warmer night in my tent. The sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky as I headed off to ride through a maze of bike lanes and two sets of stairs to the bridge over to Venice. There is a rustic bike lane and I had a huge grin to realise I was actually riding over to Venice!
I navigated my way to the excellent unmanned bicycle storage units, locked up my bike, did a dry run on how to get to the train station by bike (over a high stepped bridge 🙄), bought my train ticket for late afternoon and then could relax.A dreamy relaxing day wandering the streets of Venice,
down alleys between tall ancient buildings, over bridges with a range of boat traffic below, relaxing in the shade of the Royal garden. St Marks square was as beautiful as I had remembered from 34yrs ago on my Contiki tour visit 😊.I had no agenda other than to immerse and it's exactly what I did. aListened to Gondalier’s serenades echoing through the canals.
I ate focaccia, and ordered three Cicchetti for lunch and then cooled off with a gelati in the afternoon.
I navigated back to collect my bike, seamlessly accessed it and made my way over the stepped bridge which is the border where no bikes are allowed beyond into Venice. I was funnelled left for an entrance to the train station. I located the bike carriage and had a well air-conditioned train for the 2 hour trip to Trieste in the north east of Italy.
When I arrived I found my way to Alex’s place.
Alex and I were workawayers together for a month in Denmark 18 months ago and 4 of us shared a little house, took turns lighting the fire and learning games from each of the nations represented.
He lives on the 4th floor and so bike and gear up the stairs 😂
Alex took me on a whirlwind evening tour of the great vantage points of this incredibly hilly and grand shipping port. We just caught the sunset at the castle.
We then shared a couple of pizzas at a hillside location family favourite Pizzeria before continuing up the mountain for the twinkling lights view down to the harbour. Two loads of washing done and heading to bed in this gorgeous Loft apartment. Looking forward to exploring tomorrow.
