Day 22: Ljubljana 🇸🇮 to Athens 🇬🇷
A day getting ourselves ready for the next part of our adventure. A load of stinky cycle clothes washed and dried, My bike (affectionately called the Sherman tank by Tim) packed down and ready for flight, luggage sorted.
We then went to the National Slovenian museum and Museum of Natural history. A very rich history back to Roman times and enhanced by the fact that there are more than 12,500 caves in the “Karst” (limestone) landscape that have many artifacts that have been preserved well. 43% of the country is built on this stone.
The intricacy in the artifacts was more advanced than I have seen in other countries and the audio guide was very informative.
We then wandered down to the leafy Riverside restaurant district for a gourmet charcoal pizza. This was an exceptional pizza which we both enjoyed. Then a wander to the dessert cafe for a shared piece of Slovenian Cream cake 🥰
We have a convoluted trip to get to Athens, via Belgrade and arriving at 3am 😳. We will leave my bike and other luggage in storage at the airport while we enjoy some off-bike fun - much easier to get around with reduced luggage 😊
Slovenia - an emerging destination which is welcoming, has most signage in both Slovenian and English and often Italian and German as well. A cycling culture with families and commuters getting from A-B on various types of bikes. In the mountains the cyclists all looked and rode like Pogi, whizzing past. Drivers are courteous with cyclists too. Frequent low cost public transport services across the country. A green and natural country that has embraced agri tourism and welcomes visitors to the country. Tidy and well maintained houses with a house proud passion for flowers and vege patches. I would highly recommend adding this country to your visit list. 10/10 from me.
