Sezana to Postodjna 🇸🇮 23kms 🚴♀️
Today we chose sightseeing over big kms. We had been recommended to visit the Lipic horse stud which was started in 1580 by the Habsburgs to breed their own version of the Spanish dancing horses. It took 200years to create the breed that still exists today. These spectacular white horses are born grey or even brown but are genetically bred to turn white around 5 years of age (similar to how we go grey as older adults).
We cycled 5kms to the stud which has a stunning tree lined avenue to arrive into. We had booked a stable your and were able to enter the grounds early. To our delight, they opened the barn doors and released the Mares and foals to go to the paddocks. These majestic prancy horses thundered past. They only use the Stallions for the dancing shows. We spent a couple of hours mesmerised by these beautiful animals and surrounds.
Back on our bikes and we headed cross country to our next stop, the Skocjanske Jame Caves. These caves were by far the largest that I have been in. The underground river that runs through is rushing and goes through the cave system for 35kms before it comes to the surface. The hight and magnitude of the large ‘halls’ (caverns) is over 2 million cubic metres. We cross a bridge from one side of the chasm to the other at one stage and the drop below was significant. We walked a total of 2kms underground with most of it being stairs or steep paths up or down.
Europe really does not cater for anyone with mobility challenges!
We then cycled to a nearby town with thunderstorms hanging around and caught the train to our end destination tonight of Postodjna. We just made it to our accom before the rain came teaming down.
